Arr!… The Laws of Science be a harsh mistress

Filed under: science — 9:10 am

There is something that has bothered me for a long time now. It involves the understanding of Relativity. It seems that most people, even “educated” people don’t really understand one of the fundamentals of our modern “understanding”. There are endless theories and models based on this misunderstanding that I believe has it’s roots in math departments that don’t fully understand physics and vice versa

Take for example the model of the time traveler. In this model one man leaves on a spaceship and travels at the speed of light away from Earth for a number of years… On his return he finds the Earth has aged more than he has. While it is a quaint writing device for sci-fi it no less has absolutely no basis in reality. From what I can gather from this supposed side-effect is really nothing more than a misunderstanding of the math. What would actually occur is this: One man leaves on a spaceship and travels at the speed of light away from the Earth. While traveling at that rate he looks back at Earth to see that it is frozen in time. In reality it is not frozen in time, but by the fact that he is traveling at the same rate as the light that left Earth, the light behind him can not catch up. Now let’s say he stops. The light now begins to catch up. He can now see his child waving at him when he left. Feeling lonely he decides to go home. He starts his travel back to Earth at the speed of light. As he watches Earth he would notice that everything he is seeing begins to speed up. This would occur because the light is now reaching him quicker. When he finally returns home Earth has aged at the same rate as he did. While it may not always appear so,Time is a constant.
Another take on that is the traveler going faster than light. Again things aren’t always as they appear.

Once people begin to undestand relativity then they will begin to understand more about the universe and it’s operation. Until then you’ll continue to hear about wormholes and multidemensional blackhole singularities and the cult of the string…

At some point I’ll go further into detail about the true mechanics of our universe and even give my Theory of Everything… but until then girls and boys… class dismissed…

  1. Of course..how could someone in a spaceship travel at the speed of light in the first place? When one must eliminate their mass to gain the ability to travel at such a speed? E=MC2 … so energy and matter are inversely proportional.. according to Einstien… only energy in it’s simplest form can travel at the speed of light… humans and spaceships cannot, far too much mass. How can time be constant if everything is relative to the observer? Only the observer defines the time that took place.
Math is simply the language of science and can always be wrong.. faulty understanding of the math will lead to faulty theories.
From what I can gather… quantum mechanics seems to suggest that multidimensionality is the nature of the universe.. which is what string theory tried to convey..but failed…
Popular modern physics still has little understanding of one of the most fundamental elements of our existence.. gravity…
Much like time…. they’re not quite sure what to make of it…
Perhaps you have seen the recent studies of how light can be slowed down… and certain particles appear capable of going faster than light in certain situations…. so what would Einstien have to say about that?… There is no one way to measure time… because time itself is relative. There are equations to measure other things, but not really time. “Since 1967, the International System of Units (SI) has defined the second as 9,192,631,770 cycles of the radiation which corresponds to the transition between two energy levels of the ground state of the Caesium-133 atom.” Unlocking a unified theory would create free energy… and what corporation or goverment would do anything silly like provide energy for free, enabling humanity to evolve? What exactly are we up against here? What tangled web do we weave?

  2. First.. It’s known that one can’t propel ones self to that rate.
Time is constant becuase reguardless of the observer… It is having it’s way with him/her. Time is constant like the speed of light is constant… It’s merely a measurement. When the observer slows to a relative state. What it is relative to shares it’s measurements. Having the life span and similar cognitive attribute humans will always suffer time in the same way. It doesn’t matter how fast you go. Time still takes it’s toll.
Quantum Mechanics is for the most part math based Physics…
As for the rest of your post.. I agree… What would einstein think considering he opted for a static universe model. He was close no doubt and something either scared him away or he miscalculated.
And to quote a quote… “There’s no such thing as a free lunch” someone or something always pays for it…

  3. So you agree your idea was incorrectly identified in the first place… no “mass containing” element can even travel close to light speed. One must transcend their physical limitations and attain the equivalent of pure energy to travel at light speed…according to Einstien anyways…. Quantum mechanics is experimental based as well as math based.. math isn’t all bullshit….. what do you think particle smashers are for? These are the places where they’re discovering multidimensionality and breaking the laws of physics. Time has no exact measurement in math.. it cannot be defined the same for every particle or wavelength.. it is relative to the observer.. Time is an illusion… and modern physics cannot explain it… that is why there is no unified theory.. misunderstood concepts are delivered as fact when they are not… we can’t “see” gravity…only reflections of it… we can’t “see” time… the nature of our reality is complex indeed…
However.. I think Einstien did discover his unified theory at some point.. but when he did… someone told him to keep his fucking mouth shut if he knew what was good for him……
Many people have many reasons for this information to not be public knowledge….

  4. It’s not my idea… It’s a standard model… even those who believe wrongly know that matter does not have enough energy to propel itself at that rate.

Didn’t say math was bullshit… just people wrongly misunderstand the data…

Again with the atom smashers… if your background is one thing then you will probably see the world from that point of view… What they see happening is happening… they just misunderstand it…

Time is a measurement just like height, length, and width. They can all appear to bend…but they don’t.

explaining gravity is an essential part of any Theory of Everything… it is a part of everything after all… lol… reality is complex… but then again complexity is relative as well…

  5. Hey, sorry but your wrong about this. The ’slowing down’ of time for the traveler occurs during his acceleration when he turns around and heads back. The accelerations warps the space he is in and causes the physical reactions that govern his perception of time to slow down. When he returns, he has aged less than those on earth. Sorry to say, but you, yourself don’t have a complete understanding of relativity.

  6. Sorry Paul, but you’re incorrect. The “slowing down” of time based on the model in your comment would occur both coming and going. If acceleration is indeed the cause of “physical reactions” that govern his “perception” of time slowing as you state. The point to my post was that “perception” and “reality” are two different things. It was mostly meant as an argument against time travel. What you are forgetting is, Relativity states that given two bodies neither can ultimately be determined to be at rest. So while the traveler is traveling at the speed of light to or fro, The Earth is also potentially the one moving to or fro. Given that is true, acceleration vs “perception” is technically overruled. Both would perceive the same thing. Now too mechanically age less than Earth is another thing. This aberration occurs because of a misinterpretation of the mechanics of space. It was believed at the time that space was a vacuum. From calculations it was extrapolated that atoms age less as they accelerate and would stop aging altogether at the speed of light. There were tests done in which seem to show that speed does indeed slow atoms. Again this was framed with the belief that space was composed of nothing. What in “reality” is occurring though is that as the atoms travel at greater speeds they undergo stressing interaction with space itself. It’s not the speed that is slowing the atom but rather the interaction. I know this is not the old model but this is what is occurring. The universal speed limit is set because of this mechanism. An atom will, after a certain degree of interaction, or speed if you will, begin to decay quicker than normal. (maybe two-thirds or three-fourths the speed of light) At the speed of light the atom no longer contains it’s formal information. it effectively has been split. Yet the entire time the atom existed in the same time frame as the rest of the universe. I could be wrong though.
